Adapter Stuck In Shift Knob. I screwed it onto my shifter then put the knob on the adapter and it was fine but i don't really like the shift knob so i took it off but. The thread adapter is machined with a 16mm hex. the adapter is threaded on the outside but the inside is just smooth, i only realise till i had installed it and placed it onto my gear stick. the previous owner of my car installed an aftermarket shift knob, which would be fine, but it has an adapter that will. ever had an adapter stuck inside your shifter? If that happens with our new thread adapter, just take the easy way out! i think i know someone who used some loctite (not a lot), let it dry, took the knob off and then forcefully took the adapter off. got an ebay shift knob that has a plastic adapter. if the adapter in the ball is threaded in, you could screw in a bolt with a jam nut and try to unscrew it. Maybe you could get a bolt that will thread. 1 \ remove your shift knob. so i guess i didn't tighten my thread adapter enough, because when i tried to screw my shift knob in and it wasn't secured at the right point, it got stuck to it.
